After having established herself as a filmmaker with Dhobi Ghat, Kiran Rao went on to announce her second film as a director. Titled Laapataa Ladies, it also had Aamir Khan coming on board as a producer, along with Kiran Rao and Jyoti Deshpande. Ever since the time the film got released in theatres, it has been making news for all the right reasons. be it the critics or the common man, the film managed to touch everyone’s heart with its simplicity and simple subject.
Recently, actor cum filmmaker Anant Mahadevan spoke to Free Press Journal and made a shocking claim that the Kiran Rao directorial Laapataa Ladies had many of its establishing scenes picked up his 1999 film Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol, which starred Joy Sengupta, Vishal Varma, Neha Pendse and Sucheta Khanna and others.
On his part, he explained that in his film, a boy from the city goes to his village to get married and a mix-up happens at the railway station when he asks his new bride (who is in a veil- ghunghat) to wait on a bench, while he goes looking for some details and, on his return, he lands up joining the wrong bride!
Anant said that his film’s story takes a different route than the one taken by Laapataa Ladies. At the same time, he also made it a point to mention that there was a particular scene in the Kiran Rao directed film, which had a policeman unable to identify a lady because of the fact that she was under a ghunghat, which again, had been lifted from his film Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol.
Ananth Mahadevan also finds it a bit strange that his film Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol, which was available on Youtube till a while ago, has now disappeared mysteriously from the internet.
On his part, Ananth Mahadevan said that he has not reached out to Aamir Khan or even Kiran Rao in this regard as he was aware that they will point out the differences in both the stories. Added to that, he said, he had no proof as his film was not available on YouTube anymore. He termed the entire thing as ‘flattery more than anything else’!
As for the Kiran Rao directed Laapataa Ladies, after being appreciated by many post its theatrical release, the film is now available on OTT platform Netflix.
