Cillian Murphy spills the beans on his Oscar nom celebration for Oppenheimer

    In an exclusive interview with People, the actor disclosed that he celebrated his nomination surrounded by family back home in Ireland.

    While in Cork City with his parents and wife, Cillian Murphy learned about his Oscar nomination for his leading role in Oppenheimer. Recalling the moment, Murphy described how they were enjoying a cup of tea when the news arrived. He shared this experience during a conversation with co-stars Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt for People's annual Oscar portfolio.

    In the Christopher Nolan-directed film, the Irish actor embodies the character of J. Robert Oppenheimer. His portrayal earned him the Screen Actors Guild Award on Feb. 25.

    Cillian Murphy's Guiding Presence

    Blunt mentioned that during the film's production, the cast frequently relied on Murphy's guidance. She described him as the quietest conductor of the whole project, noting that it's not in his nature to seek leadership. Despite this, she finds something captivating about him.

    The movie stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist known as the father of the atomic bomb for his involvement in the Manhattan Project, the World War II initiative that led to the development of the first nuclear weapons.

    Oppenheimer garnered numerous accolades in 2023, including recognition as one of the top ten films by both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. The movie also secured five wins at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, and seven wins at the 77th British Academy Film Awards, including Best Film. Additionally, it received an impressive 13 nominations, including Best Picture, at the 96th Academy Awards.

    On Oscar night, Murphy intends to bring his family along to the 96th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. The event will be broadcast live on Sunday, March 10th.
